Frequently asked questions

What does your business name mean?

Our business name is R.O.C. (pronounced rock) & The Fern Orchard and Gardens. The name is connected to the names of our nieces and nephews – who we love dearly! We also like how our name represents earth in the form of rocks and life on earth in the form of plants, well ferns, which are relics of the ancient past. As symbols, rocks and ferns, represent strength, endurance, beauty and mystery to us – and we are grateful for these gifts in our daily lives.

How does a CSA work?

We provide you with fresh, local, certified organic vegetables for a 11-15 week period (or as long as the gardens are producing) in return for a set fee (from you – the eater) prior to the start of the growing season (May 1st). Together, we share the risks and rewards of gardening related to weather and other factors beyond the control of the farmer. The vegetables typically come in a weekly bin that is delivered to a pre-determined location throughout the growing season.

Where do you deliver the produce, which day of the week and during which hours?

We deliver vegetables directly to your home (if possible) in Lowe Farm, Morris and Winnipeg (areas around St. Vital and Woseley). Please confirm with us by sending us your address to see if you are within our delivery routes. Which day of the week we deliver depends on which area of Winnipeg you live. You can expect your delivery between 1pm and 9pm on your delivery day. Your delivery day will be emailed to you prior to the beginning of the start of deliveries.

What varieties of fruits and vegetables typically show up in the boxes? Do you offer any guidance on ways to use unusual vegetables and fruits?

We plant different types of vegetables and herbs and have some perennial berries (dependent upon the season); arugula, beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cantaloupe, celery, corn, cucumbers, fennel, herbs (basil, chives, dill, lemon balm, oregano, sage, sorrel), gooseberries, kale (and collard greens), kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, potatoes, pumpkin, radishes, raspberry, rutabaga (trial), spinach, strawberry, summer squash (zucchini, patty pan), swiss chard, tomato, watermelon and winter squash. Recipes for many items we deliver can be found under the recipes section of our website. We are always happy to receive new recipes.

How much produce will you receive each week?

How much you receive is dependent upon the growing season, as well as, the types of vegetables that are ready. Generally there will be 5-10 different items in your bin.

How do I pay?

Once we have confirmed that we have room for you you can mail a cheque, made payable to R.O.C. & The Fern Orchard and Gardens, to Box 37 Lowe Farm, Manitoba R0G 1E0. Please let us know in advance that you will be sending your payment by cheque or etransfer and we will confirm when we receive it.

Can I purchase additional produce?

If there is additional produce to purchase or if we are attending a farmer’s market we will let you know either by posting it on our website or twitter or via email.
